Body doubling online: free and paid options
Body doubling means doing your task next to someone else, in person or online. It is popular with people who find it hard to start. This guide lists the ways to do it online, from free to paid.

The idea is simple. Another person is present while you work. They do not need to help you or even know what you are doing. Their presence is what matters to the people who use it. Many people with ADHD describe it as useful, and many others use it to feel less alone while working from home. We are not doctors and this is not medical advice. If you think you have ADHD, talk to a professional.
1. A friend or colleague on a call
Free and often the most reliable. Agree a time, say what you will do, mute yourselves and work. When the time is up, say whether you did it. The weak point is scheduling: it only works if both of you show up.
2. A structured session service
Focusmate matches you with another person for a work session. Its pricing page lists a free plan with 3 sessions per week and no credit card, and a Plus plan with unlimited sessions at $8 a month billed annually or $12 billed monthly (checked 13 October 2026). It is built around fixed sessions with a partner. If you need that accountability, it is the most direct option here.
3. Study-with-me and work-with-me videos
People stream themselves working for hours, often with a timer on screen. It is free and always available. You get the sense of company but nobody knows you are there. We wrote more in study with me videos and other ways to get company.
4. Community spaces
Some communities and Discord servers run co-working hours. Quality varies. Ask in the channel how it works before you join.
5. A virtual room where people are around
A virtual world can give you ambient company without a schedule. Midnight Cafe is one: you walk into a cafe room as a small character, sit down and work in the next tab, with music from the record player. You can type a line to say what you are doing, or say nothing. There is no timer, no matching and no video.
That has a cost. Nobody is assigned to you, and nobody notices if you drift off. The place is also new and small, so a room may be empty when you arrive. It is free, and it is the least demanding option here.
Which one to try first
| If you need | Try |
|---|---|
| Someone who expects you at a set time | A friend, or Focusmate |
| Company at any hour, no commitment | A work-with-me video, or a virtual room |
| A pleasant place to sit with music | A virtual cafe |
You can combine them. Many people use a structured session for the one task they keep avoiding and a quiet room for everything else.
