Room decorating games you can play online

Decorating a room is a game on its own. Here are nine games where it is the main thing or a big part of it, with where each runs and what it costs, checked on the stores in October 2026.

In short

For a browser, try Habbo or Midnight Cafe. For a quiet puzzle, Unpacking or A Little to the Left. For free design on a computer, The Sims 4 base game is free. For a phone, Design Home is free with purchases. Animal Crossing and House Flipper 2 go much further.

People who search for a room decorating game want one of three things. Some want a puzzle where objects go in the right place. Some want freedom to design anything. Some want a room that other people can see. This list is sorted by which of those you are after.

Prices change often and differ by country, so the table only says whether a game is free or a one-time purchase. Check the store for the current price where you live.

Puzzle games about arranging things

Unpacking

You unpack boxes in a series of homes and decide where each object goes. The Steam page calls it a relaxing puzzle game that combines block-fitting with home decorating, where the belongings you unpack reveal clues about the person who owns them. It came out on 1 November 2021 for Windows, macOS and SteamOS and Linux. You follow the rooms the game gives you.

A Little to the Left

A puzzle game about tidying household objects, with a mischievous cat and a daily puzzle. Deku Deals lists 75+ puzzles and versions for Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, and Steam. It is about putting things in order more than choosing a style.

Games where decorating is one part of a bigger game

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

The Nintendo store page lists the game at $59.99 for Switch and Switch 2. You choose flooring and wallpaper, place furniture, change the lighting and hang items from walls or ceilings, and you can rearrange the outdoors too. Up to eight people can play together, locally or online. You need a Nintendo console, which adds to the cost.

Cozy Grove

A life-sim on a haunted island, where you help ghosts. Deku Deals says it runs on a real-world clock, with daily quests and fishing, crafting and decorating, and lists it for Switch 2, Switch, PlayStation 5 and 4, Xbox One and Steam. Decorating is a side activity here, not the main task.

House Flipper 2

You buy, fix and sell houses, or build from scratch. On its Steam page it is a renovation simulator released on 14 December 2023, with online co-op for 2 to 4 players.

Free design games

The Sims 4

The Steam page says the base game is free to download. It lists only Windows, and you need an EA account and EA's app. It is a life simulation as well as a design tool, so you will be moving people around too.

Design Home

A phone game. The App Store listing says it is free with in-app purchases and ads. You furnish 3D rooms, take weekly challenges and progress through ranks, with items from real brands such as Room & Board. It runs on iPhone and iPad. Those purchases are for virtual currency, so the free route is slower.

Rooms in a browser that other people can visit

A room that only you see is a puzzle. A room that others walk into is a social space, and that changes what you build. Two options run in a browser.

Habbo

The old pixel hotel. The Habbo site describes it as a free game you can play in your browser, with room decorating. The Wikipedia article traces it to 2000 and lists three versions, including the adult-only Habbo Hotel: Origins from 2024. See the old internet for more history, and games like Habbo Hotel for alternatives.

What to look for

Games that call themselves decorating games differ a lot. A few questions sort them quickly.

  • Is there a goal? Puzzle games like Unpacking give you a task for each room. Design games let you place anything anywhere. Neither is better. Some evenings you want a task, and some evenings you want a blank room.
  • Who sees the room? In single-player games the audience is you. In Habbo, Animal Crossing with friends, or a browser cafe, other people walk in. That changes what you build, because a room with seats and a shared surface invites people to stay.
  • How does it make money? A one-off price is simple. Free games with in-app purchases, like Design Home, sell virtual currency, so you should check how much of the content is locked.
  • Where do you play? A phone game fits a commute. A console game fits the couch. A browser game fits any computer you already have open, which matters if you only want ten minutes.

How to choose

  • You want to relax and not think about money. The Sims 4 base game and Design Home cost nothing to start. Habbo is free in a browser.
  • You want a neat, finished feeling. Unpacking and A Little to the Left.
  • You want total freedom. The Sims 4 or Animal Crossing.
  • You want visitors. Habbo, the cafe above, or Animal Crossing with friends.
  • You are on a phone. Design Home.

If you are unsure, start with something free or cheap and play it for an evening. Most people find out quickly whether they enjoy placing objects for its own sake or need a goal, a story or other people around to keep going.

Building a cozy room on purpose

The cozy room aesthetic is easy to describe and easy to miss. It is about warmth, softness and signs that someone lives there, more than about any one object.

Most of these games let you ignore a goal and make a room for its own sake. A few habits help whichever one you use.

  1. Pick two or three colors and stay with them. Warm brown, cream and one accent is enough.
  2. Place light sources at different heights. A lamp low in a corner reads differently than a ceiling light.
  3. Leave empty floor. A crowded room looks messy, not cozy.
  4. Add one odd object that tells a story: a stack of books, a half-finished cup, a plant.
  5. Look at the room from the door, because that is the angle visitors see first.

Start with a plan on paper if the game lets you place things freely. Sketch where the door is, where people will sit and where the light comes from, then add furniture to that plan. If you are decorating a room for visitors, leave a path from the door to the seats, so nobody gets stuck behind a table. Save the small objects for last, since they are the easiest to move.

It also helps to copy rooms you like. Look at a photo of a real cafe or study, note what is on the walls and the shelves, and rebuild a simpler version of it in the game. You learn which details carry the mood.

If you like the pixel look in particular, an isometric room is a good frame for it. Habbo uses that view. For more browser games in a similar mood, see cozy browser games and our list of free virtual world games in your browser.
